Financial Literacy Support

Capital City Community Center collaborates with other social service organizations in Providence to help individuals and families with issues of financial literacy.  Assistance includes such topics as “Managing Income & Debt,” “Setting Financial Goals,” “Avoiding Predatory Lending,” “Banking Practices,” and “Understanding Credit.”  Our goal is to connect people to the type of support to best meet their needs,resulting in better financial stability and security.

Capital City also is a site for the IRS’s Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. 

Through VITA, we provide free tax help to people who make $51,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers prepare simple income tax returns for qualified individuals and can advise taxpayers on special tax credits for which they may qualify, including:

  • Earned Income Tax Credit,
  • Child Tax Credit, 
  • Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled

We offer free electronic filing (E-filing). Taxpayers who e-file generally receive a refund more quickly than those filing paper returns – even faster if they have their refunds deposited directly into their bank accounts.

We prepare the tax returns during the regular tax season of January 15 - April 15 at our Lillian Feinstein Senior Center, 1085 Chalkstone Ave., Providence.  Our schedule for preparing 2013 tax returns is:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00-9:00 pm
  • Saturdays, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

We encourage volunteers from the community to become involved in this program.  Training and on-going support is provided in tax law and use of the tax preparation software.  It is a highly rewarding volunteer experience to know that you are helping someone get much-needed tax credits that contribute to their financial stability.
