Summer Enrichment
The summer months can be exciting, fun-filled times for children, but for too many Providence youth who are unsupervised when school is out, it can be dangerous too.
Research has shown that Providence elementary and middle school-aged kids that are unsupervised during out-of-school time are at high-risk for a whole host of problems, including substance use and crime. Capital City Community Centers provides a safe, healthy alternative to the streets with our Summer Enrichment Program. This state-licensed program offers 120 at-risk Providence children ages 5-16 the unique opportunity to engage in exciting outdoor activities at both our Ruggles Street location and Camp Meehan, a beautiful rustic property located on the shores the Woonasquatucket Reservoir in North Providence. Youth are engaged all summer long in programming that builds leadership, teamwork and good physical health, including adventure programming, canoeing, hiking and other athletic activities. Our program incorporates educational field trips that expose youth to the broader community and allow them to explore new learning opportunities and places. Our Character Education curriculum is teaching children to judge what is right, care deeply about what is right, and then do what they believe to be right, even in the face of pressure from peers and themselves.
Our Center offers scholarship assistance and accepts DHS child care subsidies. We are open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To learn more about enrolling your child in our program, contact Toya Barnes at 455-3880 x224 or email tbarnes@capcities.org.
