Before / After School Program (BASP)

Capital City Community Centers provides before and after school care to Providence children, ages 5-14. Our center offers scholarship assistance and accepts DHS subsidies.  We are open from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday.  Transportation is provided from the morning program to the child’s school and from the child’s school back to the afternoon program.  In addition, the BASP provides a Vacation Care Program during days and weeks when schools are closed, and a summer camp.  The Smith Hill Before / After School Program is located on 110 Ruggles Street, Providence, RI 02908,  401-455-3880.

The program activities are developed according to the children’s age levels and stages of development and provide opportunities for choice.  The weekly schedule provides opportunities for the following types of activities:

• Indoor and outdoor activities
• Quiet and active activities
• Individual, small group, and large group activities
• Large muscle and small muscle activities
• Child initiated and teacher initiated activities

Before / After School Program Philosophy

At Capital City Community Center, we believe that an effective after school program should do more than fill our children’s time and keep them off the streets.  We encourage each child’s personal development and empower them to learn to think for themselves and be responsible for their actions by having them establish rules for their own behavior (and being held to those rules by their peers).  Our goals for the BASP are to:

• Engage children in activities that are centered around their interests.
• Motivate children to form thoughts, ideas, and problem solve for themselves through positive interactions.
• Empower children to make choices through personal interactions.
• Highlight a character development curriculum with attention to children’s emotional and social skills and their positive self-esteem.
• Maintain consistent daily routines that are easily understood and followed by participants.
• Connect parents to their children’s active learning environment.

BASP Child Outcomes

We strive to achieve the following outcomes for our participants:
• Increased Academic Achievement – Improvement in school attendance, increased interest and ability in communication, literacy, increased submissions and improved quality of homework.

• Improved Character Development - virtues such as responsibility, hard work, honesty, respect, and kindness are exhibited.

• Decreased Involvement on Risky Behaviors – Decreased juvenile crime and substance abuse; knowledge, awareness and participation in prevention programs.

• Increased Community Responsibility - cultural and social activities, physical health, safety, and community service.

• Improved quality of parent participation and relationships.

The Smith Hill Before & After School Program can provide financial assistance to qualifying families.  DHS child care subsidies are welcome.  To learn more about enrolling your child in our program, contact Shelli Boeniger or Shirley Polo at 455-3880 or email sboeniger@capcities.org.
