High/Scope
Capital City Community Centers’ two early learning centers have implemented the High/Scope curriculum, a proven-effective methodology used all over the world and already having a tremendous impact on our children here at home. High/Scope’s mission is to “lift lives through education,” envisioning a world in which all educational settings use active participatory learning so everyone has a chance to succeed in life and contribute to society. Almost 40 years of research shows that High/Scope programs advance the development of children and improve their chance of living a better life through adulthood, especially low-income children.
Support from the United Way and the Governor's Workforce Board has enabled us to certify a full-time trainer experienced in High/Scope principles and practices and train our teachers on effectively and smoothly transforming their classrooms into active learning environments. Our trainer has created a "model classroom" in our Smith Hill Early Childhood Learning Center to serve as a training ground for our early childhood staff. Our core values of equality, responsibility, honesty, respect, freedom, community, generosity and hard work are closely connected with each classroom's structure and activities. The curriculum has been carefully developed to meet the particular needs of children ages 10 weeks to 6 years old.
In each High/Scope classroom, the structure reflects themes of positive interaction, actively listening and participating, and respecting individuality. Our teachers consistently:
This new learning environment is changing children's lives. We are preparing Providence and Woonsocket at-risk children for kindergarten ready to learn and succeed. Children are learning and growing at their own pace. They are developing healthy relationships with teachers and peers and respecting diversity. With guidance, children are solving problems and resolving conflicts for themselves. In essence, children are becoming prepared for a world that encourages leadership, individuality and self-motivation.
